High School diploma/GED and four years of related industry experience in audio-visual/multimedia support required.

Demonstrated knowledge of projection, audio, and multimedia technologies is required.

Prior experience in an education environment is desirable.

Certifications desired: Extron video and audio fundamentals, and basic Biamp Tesira training.

Extended Job Description


To provide technical support, consultation, programming, and design of media solutions; including conferences, events, and digital signage for the media equipment and technology needs of Cape Fear Community College faculty and staff. This includes installing, programming, troubleshooting, evaluating, maintaining, and repairing multimedia equipment in classrooms and other areas of the school; maintaining equipment inventory; providing training, creating training materials, and providing technical assistance as needed. The person in this position must demonstrate a high level of people skills in dealing with faculty, staff, students, vendors, contractors, and the public. This position also requires attention to detail, organization, and ability to multi-task on a daily basis.

Supervision Received/Exercised

• Receives general supervision from the IT Services Desktop Support Manager.
• Takes direction from the IT Helpdesk.

Essential Functions

• Evaluating, programming, recommending, installing, troubleshooting, and repairing multimedia equipment, as well as cabling including but not limited to ceiling mounted video projectors, control switches, cable patch panels, speakers, powered screens, instructor consoles, televisions, control panels, document cameras, and other multimedia equipment in classrooms and other school spaces. Cabling may require working in confined spaces.
• Designing, deploying, and programming media/AV solutions and overseeing initiatives from start to finish.
• Performing site walk-throughs as needed.
• Troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing media equipment according to standard procedures and operating manuals.
• Maintaining, cleaning, and performing regular maintenance of equipment. Moving equipment; setting up and operating equipment as requested
• Consulting with customers to define equipment and service needs.
• Participating in establishing standards for multimedia systems.
• Develops and nurtures relationships with faculty and staff to provide information on current and future technology selections and use.
• Maintaining and updating inventory in collaboration with Equipment Inventory.
• May be required to work outside regular working hours.

Other Important Functions

• Maintaining and updating equipment inventory.
• Providing technical advice, training, and hands-on assistance as requested. Maintaining and/or increasing technical knowledge through coursework, workshops, seminars, and/or reading.
• Contacting second level support as needed for networking or computer-related issues.
• Maintaining security of equipment; investigating missing, lost, and overdue equipment; appropriately storing equipment.
• Working with vendors to solicit quotes for needed media equipment for classrooms and other college areas; coordinating receipt of quotes and providing quotes upon request.
• Providing timely support through help desk requests and servicing emergency calls. Following up, updating, and closing tickets in a timely manner.
• Performing other related duties and projects as assigned.

Knowledge of

• Current techniques and procedures for trouble-shooting, programming, and maintenance of a full range of audiovisual equipment including, but not limited to, computers, Extron and control panels, projectors, speakers, DVD players, switching equipment, document cameras, and video conferencing.
• Basic tools, equipment, and procedures for repairing media equipment and peripheral devices.
• Demonstrated proficiency using standard office software applications; Windows, Adobe and Macintosh graphics applications; AV resource management system; and other multimedia software application packages.

Ability To

• Ability to solve problems and resolve conflicting user requests under time constraints with frequent interruptions and work effectively with both technical and non-technical personnel.
• Work with diverse groups of people.
• Assist faculty and staff in the operation of audiovisual equipment; must be able to explain technical processes to a variety of audiences including outside constituents, administrators, faculty, staff, and students in a customer friendly manner.
• Work safely and follow safety rules and procedures.
• Work independently in the absence of supervision.
• Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
o Walking, standing, sitting, bending, reaching, crawling, pushing, and pulling.
o Lifting and carrying materials and equipment.
o Operating assigned equipment.
o Climbing ladders and working in tight spaces.
