Minimum Required Education/Training

• High school diploma or equivalency is required
• Must be certified as a law enforcement officer (or have the ability to obtain certification within 60 days) in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission
• Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License

Minimum Required Experience
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills

• Associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university in Criminal Justice or other closely related field
• At least one year experience working in police, fire, or EMS organization

Definition

The Campus Police Officer is a member of the campus police department which protects and serves the college community by performing security and public safety duties within assigned areas. The officer will be required to provide a variety of services to the college community including but not limited to community policing, traffic and criminal law enforcement, emergency response, provide escort services and other basic public assistance services as needed. Remain alert to emergency situations and provides first-line response, emergency management, and/or referral if required.

Supervision Received/Exercised

Receives general administrative direction from the Campus Police Chief
• Exercises no supervision

Essential Functions

These duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Patrol assigned area on foot, on bicycle, or in motor vehicle, as assigned, to ensure a safe environment
• Serve as First Responder to all campus emergencies: closely follows emergency procedures as described in the Campus Safety Plan; coordinate emergencies through command structure and required protocol to include notification to mutual aid agencies; assist by directing emergency vehicles and providing on-scene assistance as directed by qualified personnel
• Provide first aid treatment to members of the college community and to visitors.
• Examine doors, windows, and gates to ensure they are intact and secure; use College keys to open and close buildings; monitor closed buildings for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities
• Receive, investigate and complete reported complaints, and other investigative services as requested
• Cooperate with local law enforcement, criminal justice and emergency response agencies on matters of mutual interest
• Provide escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty, as necessary; provides other public assistance, such as lockout services, jump-starts, and routine information
• Inform and warn violators of rule infractions and issues campus citations as needed
• Remain alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and persons violating the student code of conduct
• Approaches suspicious persons/behavior; may confront and detain violators, as required
• Perform periodic checks of emergency call boxes and/or street lights to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions of any facility infrastructure as required
• Patrol and monitor assigned parking areas to provide public security and assistance
• Prepare routine and standardized reports. Prepares and presents testimony in court
• May provide specialized security in a retail area, requiring specific knowledge of the operating environment
• Provides security for special college events

• Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate supervisory personnel

• North Carolina criminal law, laws of evidence, search, and seizure

• Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities:
o Work in changing atmospheric and environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises, including working indoors and outdoors
o Sustain moderate physical activity such as handling average-weight objects, standing and or walking for extended periods of time, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching
o Dexterity necessary to qualify yearly with all departmental weapons
o Operate campus police vehicles during emergency conditions
o Wear and use personal protective equipment
o Work during inclement weather and emergency situations
o Physical ability to safely restrain uncooperative individuals for protection of college community
o Some lifting, bending, climbing, and running are required for emergency situations
o Work in an environment that involves some exposure to hazards and/or physical risks
o Ability to physically operate and handle departmental equipment
o Ability to see, hear and speak is required to communicate with students, faculty, staff, and the general public
o Must successfully pass the North Carolina Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT) prior to final offer of employment and must be able to pass the POPAT annually
